Road Safety Poster Competition and Be Bright...Be Safe Day

2nd November 2015

Dear Parents & Carers

Road Safety Poster Competition – October half term homework project

We would like to put road safety signs up outside the playground gate as a constant reminder to the children to keep safe when crossing the road.  I am sure our children can come up with some brilliant ideas for the design of the signs so I would like to ask them to each design a road safety poster.  We will then choose winners and their designs will be published on outdoor boards at the start of our road safety week (week commencing 23 November).  I would like to set this as a homework task for all the children to complete over the October half term break.  The children should hand in their poster to their class teacher or office on the first day back after the break - Monday 2 November 2015.  The poster should be no larger than A4.   Please make sure your child puts their full name and class on the back of their poster.

We hope that this homework project will help to remind the children about road safety and that they enjoy getting out their coloured pens and pencils to start designing.  We can’t wait to see their ideas!

 Be Bright…Be Safe

To fund the manufacture of the signs we thought it would be a good idea to hold a fund raising ‘bright day’.  As part of our road safety week activities, on Friday 27 November, we would like the children to come into school wearing any and all of their bright clothes – the brighter the better!  We would ask each child to bring in a £1 on our ‘bright day’.

Finally, as the clocks go back it is a good time to remind the children about road safety and being seen in the dark.  We have other exciting events and activities planned for our road safety week and more information will follow in the newsletter after half term.  In the meantime, see below for some tips on how to be bright and be seen.

Be Bright, Be Seen - Road Safety - Tips on how to be bright and be seen

 ·     Wear brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing as it shows up well in daylight and at dusk, bad weather and shorter daylight hours cause poor visibility, so make sure you can be see

 ·      Wear reflective gear if out after dark to make sure you can be seen in car headlights

 ·      Clip-on reflectors, arm bands and stickers on clothes or school bags improve visibility, reflective strips can be bought to stick on bags and clothes

 ·      Cross at pedestrian crossings whenever you can - at night if there is no crossing near try to cross under a street light

 ·      If you are walking in an area which has either no or poor lighting, it is safer to carry a torch
